Formed by Scott and Seth Avett in the wake of their previous band Nemo, the Avett Brothers have grown and blossomed since they first released the hard-to-find “Country Was,” in 2002. Gradually expanding their sound and borrowing from genres across the board, they grew a strong following for their innovative and thoroughly distinct sound. Their most recent work, 2016’s “True Sadness,” reflects how they’ve developed over time along with their audience, and its personal themes reflect on the strength of the bond between the band and their fans. Raching number 3 on the Billboard 2000 and nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album, the album was received with delight by both audiences and critics, with Rolling Stone magazine stating; "It feels like the record's most profound celebration – just joyous strumming, bowing, and the sound of earnest voices collectively making light out of dark.”
