The Chainsmokers is an EDM music production and DJ duo comprising Drew Taggart and Alex Pall. Emerging in 2012, the pair, which was initially composed of DJ Rhett Bixler and Pall, was relaunched as an EDM act, and Taggart came in to replace Bixler. The duo released their breakout hit, “#selfie,” in 2013, after which The Chainsmokers began booking live gigs. One of their early performances included opening for Timeflies in a New York City club called Terminal 5. “#Selfie” was re-released in 2014 through Republic Records, and the song entered five Billboard charts, including peaking at 16 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Apart from the U.S., the single became an international hit, entering the charts in over 20 countries.
After their phenomenal breakout in 2014, The Chainsmokers released several more bangers, including “Roses,” featuring singer Rozes in 2015. In 2016, the duo's popularity grew immensely upon releasing their sophomore EP, Collage. The highly-acclaimed record spawned the seven-time platinum hit “Don’t Let Me Down” featuring Daya. The song topped two Billboard charts and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2017, the song won The Chainsmokers their first Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Moreover, it entered the charts in over 30 countries, making the single one of The Chainsmokers' biggest worldwide hits.
Five months later, The Chainsmokers released their follow-up single from Collage. “Closer,” featuring Halsey, became a megahit across the world. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the duo and Halsey’s first single to reach number 1 on the chart. Besides Billboard, the song also ranked number 1 in 19 other countries. The song’s success led to numerous accolades, including a Grammy nomination, an iHeart Radio Music Award, and three Billboard Music Awards. Moreover, the song was later certified platinum 15 times in the U.S.
After their EP’s success, The Chainsmokers dropped their studio album, Memories… Do Not Open, in 2017. The album spawned the four-time platinum hit “Paris,” topped the Billboard 200, and entered the charts in 23 other countries. The album was later certified platinum after selling over one million copies in the U.S.
The pair from New York is truly a hitmaker, and they’ve got plenty more up their sleeves.
