The Shin’s debut release, Oh, Inverted World, features the renowned indie track, “New Slang,” which defined the band’s career in the indie music industry. The New Mexico natives dropped the album on June 19, 2001, with much critical acclaim. Although it didn’t dominate the charts, the album resonated well with many indie listeners, developing a massive cult following. Produced by The Shin frontman James Mercer, Oh, Inverted World earned a gold certification in the U.S. In 2004, “New Slang” and another track from the album, “Caring is Creepy,” were featured in the film Garden State. The character referred to the former track as “the song that will change your life.” This led to broad exposure and an increase in record sales of Oh, Inverted World three years after it was dropped. Last year, the band released a reissue of the album, mastered by Bob Ludwig and Mercer, to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

After Oh, Inverted World, The Shins has four more studio albums. Their third release, Wincing the Night Away, spawned the hit singles, “Phantom Limb,” “Turn On Me,” “Australia,” and “Sea Legs.” The 2007 record received wide critical acclaim, with some critics acknowledging the album as the band’s best work. Wincing the Night Away also performed impressively on the mainstream charts. The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and charted in 12 other countries. One year after its release, Wincing the Night Away was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
