You can no longer easily catch the world-famous DJ Deadmau5 performing his live sets. These days, you have to plan out and anticipate where the award-winning performer will travel to. He goes where there is the most demand, but you won’t see Deadmau5 on a major 30-date North American tour soon. If you want to see him, you have to go where he’s scheduled to perform. Joel Thomas Zimmerman, popularly known as Deadmau5 to me, is a veteran DJ and music producer who emerged in the late ‘90s. Zimmerman is one of the few famous DJs who initially hid his identity by wearing a mask during performances – similar to Daftpunk and Marshmello. Deadmau5 specializes in progressive house and trance music and is responsible for popularizing the genre. In an interview, he acknowledged that he is partially why EDM became a commercially hit. During the 2000s, there was an influx of pop and R&B artists who infused EDM into their mix. But that was not bad because this paved the way for other DJs, like Marshmello, Calvin Harris, Alesso, and more, to achieve commercial success.
In 2009, Deadmau5 achieved mainstream success with his fourth studio album, For Lack of a Better Name. The effort peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Dance Chart, as well as entering the charts in five other countries. The album later went gold in the U.K., which also went to number 1 on the dance chart. Deadmau5 broke into the Billboard 200 for the first time the following year with his follow-up album, 4×4=12. The record peaked at number 47 on the chart and number 2 on the Dance chart. Moreover, the record later sold over a million copies in the U.S., earning a platinum certification in the process.
Deadmau5 moved on to release eight studio albums, three of which went to number 1 in the U.S. His exemplary work has also earned him numerous accolades, including six Grammy nominations, five Beatport Music Awards, three International Dance Music Awards, three Juno Awards, and many more.
