The 1939 American musical fantasy film was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), an adaptation of the 1900 children's fantasy book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. Known for its use of Technicolor, its wonderful storytelling, and musical score, the film was hailed for its memorable characters that bring life to the movie as a whole. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow" and Best Original Score for Stothart.

In a report by the U.S. Library of Congress, it is the most seen film in history, and chosen as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Moreover, it also made it to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. The film also made it to best lists of various publications including Variety's "100 Greatest Movies of All Time", British Film Institute's "50 films to be seen by the age of 14", and many more. Critics have always praised and credited the movie as one of the greatest films of all time.

As it heads back to the big screen at FILM ON THE ROCKS, follow Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto on an adventure to meet the Wizard, hoping to get their home and fulfill others' wishes too.

"The Wizard of Oz takes on a life in our head that it never quite attains on the screen. Because of the power of imagination, the film transcends the limitations of the techniques used to craft it," James Berardinelli says in his review of the film.

"The world of yesterday's, and perhaps tomorrow's, dreams created decades ago in the imagination of Frank L. Baum comes to the screen as a triumph of the movie camera in the realm of fantasy." Jay Carmody of the Washington Star shared in a review.
