The Matrix, a cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction, opened in theatres in March 1999 with massive critical acclaim. The film is a pioneer in the fields of innovative visual effects, action sequences, cinematography, and entertainment value. The Matrix received nominations at the 72nd Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing, winning all four awards, among many other accolades. The film was also selected in 2012 for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant”. This epic film also has multiple highly successful sequels.
