Indie-rock icon Ryan Adams is known for his numerous covers of popular pop and rock songs. Some of his most memorable covers include Oasis' “Wonderwall,” Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York,” and “Bad Blood.” In addition to covers, Adams has also released several original singles, such as “New York, New York,” “Answering Bell,” “This Is It,” and “Lucky Now.” During the ‘90s, Adams was a member of the alternative country band Whiskeytown. After the band’s dissolution, he pursued his solo career. He dropped his debut album, Heartbreaker, in 2000, and the album became somewhat of a sleeper hit. It charted on the Billboard 200 16 years later after its release.
The following year, Adams broke into the Billboard 200 with his sophomore album, Gold. The 2001 effort spawned two hit singles, “New York, New York” and “Answering Bell.” Meanwhile, the album entered the charts in nine countries, making the effort his first international success. His work with the album earned him m Grammy nominations for Best Rock Albums, Best Rock Vocal Performance for “New York, New York,” and Best Male Country Performance for “Lovesick Blues.”
In 2004, Adams covered Oasis’ “Wonderwall.” The song is featured in his fifth studio album, Love is Hell. The track later earned Adams another Grammy nomination for Best Rock Solo Performance. The following year, Adams began releasing efforts with The Cardinals. His sixth studio album, Cold Roses, featured his backing band comprising Pemberton, J.P. Bowersock, Catherine Popper, and Rachel Yamagata. Together with this initial line-up, Adams recorded 18 tracks for the double album. Cold Roses, which spawned singles, “Let It Ride” and “Plateau,” debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200 and entered the charts in ten other countries.
With his solo career spanning 23 years, Adams has released 24 studio albums, five of which were with the Cardinals. In 2006, the band, including Adams, went to the studio to record Willie Nelson’s 2006 album, Songbird.
