Indiana-born jam band Umphrey’s McGee is the brainchild of four university students in 1997. Band members Bredn Bayliss, Ryan Stasik, Joel Cummins, and Mike Mirro got together while attending school at Notre Dame. During their early years, the band performed a combination of original songs and covers. Some of their more notable covers were songs from renowned bands, such as Phish, Grateful Dead, Gun N Roses, and more.

In 1998, Umphrey’s McGee released their debut effort, Greatest Hits Vol III. Released independently through Street Gold Records, the album was the band’s only record to feature all four original members. Umphrey's had pressed approximately 1,500 physical copies sold out the first week of its release. In 2006, the band made their first breakthrough into the Billboard charts with the release of their fourth album, Safety in Numbers. The critically-acclaimed effort debuted in the Billboard 200, Heatseekers chart, and Top Independent Albums. Compared to their other works, the album was a stripped-down, acoustic approach to Umphrey’s Mcgee jamming. Still, they maintained their progressive elements, staying true to the band’s music style.

Since their incredible debut on the chart, the band’s subsequent albums have consistently entered the Billboard charts. In 2018, Umphrey’s McGee released their highest-charting effort, It’s Not Us. The eleventh studio album peaked at number 43 on the Billboard 200 and number 7. The album showcased a wide range of elements – from progressive rock to jazz fusion and heavy metal.

Last year, the band released their latest album, Asking for A Friend, via the independent record label, Nothing Too Fancy Music. In a statement, keyboardist Joel Cummins mentioned, “There is something to be said for making a cool, cohesive album in 2022. It’s not like the live show, where we’re really striving for improvisation moments that are moving. This is more about architecture and song construction. In a way, this is a little bit riskier for us.”

Today, the band’s current line-up comprises Bayliss, Cummins, Stasik, Farag, Jake Cinniger, and Kris Myers. The shows at the Red Rocks Amphitheater will also feature performances from special guest Moe. In a statement, the band said, “We are thrilled to be welcoming our long-time compadres Moe for an extended set both nights at Red Rocks! And if you have rocked the Rocks with us before, you know it is not-to-be-missed – if you haven’t, make this your year!”
